Top 5 Things You Need To Know As A New Student
Thinking back to when I first went into higher education, here are my 5 things a new student needs to know.
1. It’s going to be all right
It can be a scary thought if you’re moving away from the family home, maybe even the town you grew up in. You’re leaving behind your family, probably most or all of your friends to start new.
You need to know though, it’s going to be all right. Those first few days you will be finding your fee – but once you do, you’re going to have a great time.
2. It’s not all beer and parties
One of the things I think many new students think it’s going to be all beer and parties. It’s not. You have to do some work to stay in your education placement. Universities, for example, have the end of year exams each you that you have to pass, otherwise you lose your place.
3. It’s not all work work work
On the opposite side of number 2, it’s not all just work. You need to make time to have some fun, drink some beer and let your hair down. Just don’t let it affect your work.
4. You will make new friends
Leaving behind most, or all, of your friends that you grew up with can feel difficult. In a new place with new people – just remember, virtually everyone else starting as a new student is in the same situation.
Just spend the moment talking to people. In the lunch queue, as you queue for coffee in the morning, in your lectures. Get to know people and you will make new, good, lifelong friends there too.
5. It’s over too quick
The last thing is that time goes quick. Before you know it, your time is finished and you out in the big wide world. So, just enjoy being a student. Make the most of all the opportunity and have fun.
